Boiling Point
Veronika Fabian (Hungary/ UK) explores the potential for jewelry to embolden… to empower the wearer to take action against negative societal and global dynamics. In her latest body of work, Boiling Point, Fabian’s inspiration begins with a power plant. Various elements of water and steam pipes used in power generation are incorporated into the works, transformed and distorted into wearable neckpieces and wall sculptures, with chains as her base material.
The loose industrial chains are laid side by side and soldered together, creating ’chain sheets’ which are flattened and formed to their final shapes by hand. Contrasting this craft- intensive process with the industrial genome of her material, the artist is on a quest to look for the place of craft within today’s worldwide factory production system.
Born in Hungary, jewelry artist Veronika Fabian earned her BA in Jewelry Design from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London in 2018 followed by earning an MA at the Sandberg Institute, Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam NL in 2020. With a background of studies in social sciences and analysis, her ongoing series’ investigate the impact of contemporary capitalism on daily life and personal identity, both of which play a vital role in her work.
Fabian has received numerous awards including a Swarovski ‘Power of Transformation’ prize, Cartier Scholarship, Marzee Graduate prize and the MullenLowe NOVA, Unilever ‘Unstereotype’ Award. Her work has been exhibited internationally and can be found in collections such as the National Museum of Scotland, the Dallas Museum of Arts, the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim and the Museum of Applied Arts in Hungary.
